Morning Prayer: Short Prayers to Start Your Day With God

Quick answer

A good morning prayer can be a few honest sentences: thank God for the day, hand it to him, and ask for help with what's ahead. You can pray this one before you get up: "Lord, thank you for this new day. I give you my plans, my worries and the people I love. Lead me today, and help me notice you in the ordinary hours. Amen."

A short morning prayer you can pray right now

If you only have a minute, start here. Read it slowly, out loud or in your head, and change any line so it fits your day.

"Father, thank you for waking me up this morning and for the breath in my lungs. Before the day fills up, I give it to you. You know what's on my calendar and what's weighing on my heart. Give me wisdom for my decisions, patience with the people around me, and courage for the hard parts. Keep me honest and kind. Help me remember that you're with me in every hour of this day. In Jesus' name, amen."

That's the whole thing. A morning prayer doesn't need special words or a long time. God hears simple prayers.

Morning prayers for different days

Every morning is different. Some start with gratitude, others with dread. Here are ten short prayers for the days you're likely to have. Pray the one that fits, or borrow a line from another.

A morning prayer of gratitude

"Lord, thank you for this day. I didn't earn it, and you gave it anyway. Thank you for rest, for food on the table, and for the people who make my life full. Before I ask you for anything, I want to say thank you. Help me live this day grateful. Amen."

Before work or school

"Lord, go with me into today's work. Help me do it well and honestly, as if I were doing it for you. When I'm tempted to rush, cut corners or compare myself with others, steady me. Use what I do today to help someone. Amen."

For your family

"Father, I bring you my family. You know each of them better than I do. Protect them today, wherever they go. Where we've been short with each other, bring us back together. Help me love them with patience and listen before I speak. Amen."

For a hard or anxious day

"Lord, I woke up anxious, and you already know why. I can't hold all of this on my own, so I'm giving it to you, one worry at a time. Calm my mind enough to take the next step. Remind me that I'm not alone in this day. Amen."

If anxiety is what wakes you up, our guide to morning prayer for anxiety before work has a few more steps for those mornings.

For guidance in a decision

"God, I have a decision in front of me and I don't see the way clearly. Give me wisdom, and help me want your will more than my own comfort. Close the doors I shouldn't walk through. Give me peace about the right one, and the courage to take it. Amen."

For patience and kind words

"Lord, guard my mouth today. Before I answer, help me listen. When I'm tired or irritated, give me patience I don't have on my own. Let my words build people up instead of tearing them down. Amen."

For strength when you're tired

"Father, I'm tired before the day has even started. Give me enough strength for today, not for the whole week, just for today. Help me rest in you while I work, and show me where I can slow down. Amen."

When you don't feel like praying

"Lord, I don't feel much this morning, and I'm not sure what to say. I'm here anyway. Meet me in the quiet. I'd rather show up empty-handed than stay away. Amen."

Dry seasons happen to many believers. If this is where you are, read how to pray when you feel spiritually dry.

For someone you love

"Lord, I bring you someone I love today. You know their name, and you know what they're carrying. Be near them today, and give them what they need most: help, healing, wisdom or rest. Show me how I can love them well. Amen."

A prayer of surrender

"Father, this day is yours. I give you my plans, my fears and my expectations. Where I want control, teach me to trust you. Teach me to want your will more than mine. Amen."

Pray Scripture in the morning

When your own words run out, the Bible gives you words to pray. These verses talk about the morning in particular. The quotations are from the King James Version (KJV).

  • Psalm 5:3: "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up." Pray it as a promise to bring God your first words of the day.
  • Psalm 143:8: "Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee." A good prayer for a day when you need direction.
  • Lamentations 3:22–23: "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." Pray it on mornings after a bad day.
  • Psalm 118:24: "This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Say it before you check what the day holds.
  • Psalm 90:14: "O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days." Pray it for yourself and your household.

Read the verse once, then pray it back in your own words. To go further, see how to pray the Psalms in the morning and how to pray the Lord's Prayer in the morning.

A simple shape for your own morning prayer

Ready-made prayers help, but over time you'll want to talk to God in your own words. This simple shape keeps a morning prayer from turning into nothing but a list of requests:

  • Thank: name one specific thing you're grateful for.
  • Surrender: hand over what you're trying to carry alone.
  • Ask: tell God plainly what you need today.
  • Pray for others: name one or two people.
  • Take one faithful step: ask what obedience looks like today, then do it.

You don't need all five every morning. If you'd like to write your prayers down, our prayer journal guide has a four-part template and prompts for blank days.

Pray before your phone takes over

For many of us, the first thing we reach for is the phone, and within minutes the day is full of other people's voices. Try praying before you open a single app, even if it's only the short prayer at the top of this page. If the phone usually wins, these ideas for reading the Bible before you check your phone can help.

How Koum turns your alarm into a morning prayer

Koum is a Christian Bible alarm. Instead of a snooze button, the alarm stops when you prove the day's verse by scanning an open physical Bible, speaking it aloud, or typing it. If you give up, a Chase you've chosen can call you back until you prove it.

Then your Morning opens:

  • Prayer: write or dictate a prayer, then say Amen when you're ready.
  • Devotional: spend a few more moments with the verse.
  • Journal: keep what stayed with you.

Koum has a built-in Bible, and you can go back to earlier verses, prayers and journal entries by calendar or search your own words. You don't need an account or an email address. Your prayers and journal stay in your private iCloud, never on Koum's servers, and prayer audio never leaves your device.

Koum requires iOS 26 or later. After onboarding, the Bible alarm and the full Morning require a subscription.

If you're building a whole morning around prayer, see a Christian morning routine built on prayer.

Put this into practice with Koum.

Koum asks you to open, scan, speak, or type a Bible verse before the alarm ends. Then it gives the morning room for prayer, a devotional, and a private reflection.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good short morning prayer?

Try this: "Lord, thank you for this day. I give it to you. Lead me, and help me notice you in it. Amen." Short and honest is enough.

What should I say in a morning prayer?

Thank God for something specific, give him the day, ask for what you need, and pray for someone else. If you're stuck, pray one of the verses above in your own words.

How long should a morning prayer be?

There's no set length. One minute you pray every day will do more than a long prayer once a month. Start small and let it grow.

Is it better to pray before or after reading the Bible?

Both work. Some people pray first to ask for understanding, and others read first and then respond. We compare the two in praying before and after you read the Bible.

Can I pray in bed?

Yes. God hears you wherever you are. If you tend to fall back asleep, sit up, put your feet on the floor, or pray out loud.
